I’m planning to start saving all the interesting articles I find about coins and currency so I can share them with you all. There’s some really fascinating stuff out there!
Here are some articles I enjoyed this week:
1. **Is This The Very First U.S. Coin?** on NPR — “In 2013, David McCarthy spotted a rare coin in an auction catalog and suspected it might be the very first coin minted by the United States back in 1783. Not just from the first batch, but the very first one.”
2. **Rare National Banknotes Highlight the Stack’s Bowers ANA Currency Auction** on GreySheet.com — “A small-size note was actually the highest grossing item in the auction; a beautiful Fr.2220-F 1928 $5000 FRN from Atlanta, graded PCGS Very Fine 30 PPQ, sold for $129,250 (lot #10401). Check out the picture above—what a beauty!”
3. **Why isn’t the World’s Fair of Money being live-streamed?** on Coin Collectors Blog — “Since joining the American Numismatic Association Technology Committee, I’ve been advocating for making parts of the show accessible to those who can’t attend. With today’s technology, this should be doable!”
4. **What kind of hobby is this?** on Coin Update News — “I sometimes compare our hobby to buying used cars. When someone you know ends up with a lemon, do we think it’s their own fault for not checking it thoroughly? Why do so many coin collectors seem to believe fellow hobbyists deserve their misfortunes? (Of course, not you!).”
5. **Gold coin worth $4.3 million stolen and melted down by Lebanese mafia** on Alarabiya.net — “A gold coin as large as a car wheel, weighing 100 kilograms and valued at $4 million, was involved in one of Germany’s most spectacular heists.”
Have you come across any good ones lately?
