I recently stumbled upon two intriguing items that really caught my interest!
At first, I didn’t make the connection until I happened to place them side by side. That’s when it hit me just how ironic their pairing was—quite a funny moment!
One of them seems to mimic the design of an old gold Indian Head piece. However, this particular item is crafted from a Seated Liberty Half Dime, which is both beautiful and tiny! A pin was soldered onto its front, allowing it to be worn as a tribute to a loved one. That’s why it’s called a “Love Token.” Back in the day, artists would engrave one side of coins to create meaningful gifts for people to remember them by, though these tokens weren’t typically made as pins.
Here’s what the coin’s reverse side would have looked like before the engraver transformed it.
Interestingly, these coins were called Half Dimes before the introduction of “Nickels.” Isn’t that fun to learn?
So, there you have it—coins masquerading as pins and buttons posing as coins! This hobby is full of surprises.
If anyone has the initials M.M.P. or C.E.C., I’d be happy to sell it to you for the $20 I paid. Maybe you can revive the tradition?
P.S. If you enjoy this sort of thing, check out the Pins/Brooches page at the Love Token Society!
