Exploring a 1755 Spanish Shipwreck Coin: A Show & Tell Event

Good morning!

I recently received something from an old friend that I couldn’t resist sharing with you—it’s just too fascinating! One of the first coins I ever collected came from an ancient shipwreck, and coins like these are perfect gateways into the world of collecting. While my friend might not be a collector, her admiration for this particular coin is truly captivating.

Here’s the note she sent along with the pictures—thank you, Desiree!

This is a coin from a Spanish shipwreck dating back to 1755. I wear it as a necklace to keep a reminder of the things I cherish.

The wreck occurred near my hometown, Vero Beach, FL, and was discovered by Mel Fisher—a man my dad helped with engine repairs. He always believed that “Today is the day” he’d discover treasure.

This coin connects me to my dad, my love for water, my hometown, and the significance of history.
