“What’s the value of this coin?”
It’s the most asked question in the world of collecting! Friends, family, and even acquaintances often ask me this almost every week.
Instead of keeping these intriguing answers buried in emails and chats, I’ve decided to start a new series. Here, we’ll showcase various coins (or currencies) and discuss their worth alongside them.
And by “answers,” I mean “my opinion,” since different people might have varying responses. I’d like to think that my decade-long experience, where I’ve helped liquidate over a dozen collections, counts for something.
Either way, we’ll get to admire more beautiful coins here and hopefully learn a bit along the way. If you have any questions or coins you’d like to submit, I’d be delighted to take a look at them next!

Let’s start the series with a few coins from my friend Donna Freedman, who writes a fantastic blog about finance and saving money at Surviving and Thriving. She discovered these coins at home and asked me to provide some insights.
Here’s her email and my response. That first coin is a real gem!

Hey J.,
I have a few coins I hoped you’d take a look at—after all, you offered!
I hope you and your household are safe during these difficult times.
Best regards,
Donna

Good morning!
Everything’s good here—just trying to keep sane amidst the chaos!
I looked through all the coins; none are rare, but half of them are quite interesting and valuable! I have a soft spot for coins from the 1800s.
Here’s the information and their values:
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the fun mental challenge!
