My Newly Acquired Vintage Coin Safe

My Newly Acquired Vintage Coin Safe

I finally got around to taking some photos of the new safe I picked up! 🙂 I wasn’t really looking to buy one since I already have a safe for important documents and my special coin collection. But a friend really wanted to get rid of it, and I thought it would make a great decorative piece.

And it sure does! It’s probably the heaviest thing I’ve ever lifted, but it looks fantastic in my office. Not only can I keep some of my coins within arm’s reach, but it also doubles as a mini coffee table for magazines and other items. After a few weeks, I’ve come to appreciate its dull color and the “character” from years of use 😉 It was definitely worth the $100 now that I’ve found a way to make it practical.

After doing some research, I discovered these “Meilink” combination safes can be quite pricey—even older models like this one, which often go for $200-$400 on eBay! My friend mentioned that this one was made in the ’50s or ’60s and said, “they don’t make them like that anymore.” So, it turns out I scored a nice antique as well 😉

Here’s a peek at what’s inside right now:

I’m a big fan of the industrial-strength wheels on the bottom, haha. Although they roll horizontally instead of forwards and backwards, which is a bit puzzling. Maybe it helps keep the safe flush against walls?

It’s fireproof and insulated too—gotta love that! And you’ve already seen the vintage Yale combination knob at the top… It definitely gives off an old-school vibe 🙂

I thought you all might find it interesting… It feels much more fitting for my antique coins than a modern safe from a big-box store, haha. And I bet it’s a lot sturdier!

Happy collecting out there…
