Fort Worth, TX – April 29, 2025 – An amazing discovery has been made with a brand-new coin: a 2024 Kennedy Half Dollar exhibiting a rare and potentially unique mint error. This error, featuring a star design on the front of the coin, has been authenticated and verified as genuine by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), a leading third-party grading organization.

The coin, recently uncovered in an untouched bank roll, showcases a recessed star on President Kennedy’s cheek—an area where a star design is not supposed to be.

PCGS has classified this as a “Dropped Star Obverse” Mint Error and given it a high grade of MS 65, signifying its excellent uncirculated condition. This error occurs when a compacted piece of material, often shaped by the die’s design cavity (in this case, possibly a star from the reverse side of the die), breaks loose and lands on the coin blank before the coin is minted, resulting in an indented impression.

While minor mint errors happen, discovering such a prominent and clearly defined error, especially a design element like a star in such an unexpected place on the front of a modern coin, is extremely rare. Experts point out that errors like this, particularly the “Dropped Star Obverse” seen on a new U.S. coin series, are exceedingly uncommon, making this a potentially significant find for the series and collectors alike. Its discovery directly from a fresh bank roll adds an intriguing twist to the story.

This find demonstrates that careful searching through currently circulating coins can still lead to exciting numismatic discoveries. Collectors are encouraged to closely inspect their 2024 Kennedy Half Dollars for similar errors.
