Show & Tell: Coin from a 1755 Spanish Shipwreck

Good morning!

I recently received something intriguing from an old friend and couldn’t resist sharing it with you 🙂 One of the first coins I ever acquired myself came from an ancient shipwreck, and I find they’re a fantastic introduction to the world of collecting! Although my friend isn’t a collector, her fascination with this particular coin is truly captivating.

Here’s the note she sent along with the pictures—thanks, Desiree!

This coin was discovered in a Spanish shipwreck from 1755. I wear it as a necklace as a reminder of the things I cherish.

The shipwreck is off the coast of Vero Beach, FL, where I’m from. It was found by Mel Fisher, a man my dad helped with engine repairs, who lived by the motto “Today is the day” he’d find treasure.

The coin connects my dad, my love for the sea, my hometown, and the significance of history.

Every coin has a story, but often it’s forgotten over time. It’s up to us to preserve these memories!
