The Tale of a Coin Collection

The Tale of a Coin Collection

Hi everyone!

I recently received a delightful story via email that reminded me of all of you. 😊

I’ve been a bit absent lately, but let’s jump-start this blog and keep the excitement of collecting alive! I’ve continued my collecting endeavors behind the scenes and even launched a new service to help folks inventory and liquidate inherited coin collections. If you ever need assistance, feel free to reach out! Life has been busy with work, kids, and everything else, which led to the blog taking a backseat for a while.

But now we’re back! Let’s start things off with a nostalgic tale about the days when silver coins were still somewhat common. I unfortunately never experienced this firsthand, but I drool just thinking about it!

Over to you, John!

Hey J. Money,

Since I know you like coins, I thought I’d share a quick, fun story with you.

My dad and I have been collecting coins ever since I was a kid. I don’t actively collect anymore, but my dad still has our little collection. The interesting part of this story begins with my high school job at a small gas station in my hometown of York, PA.

I started working there at 16 and stayed for many years, even post-college until I found my first professional job. Working at a gas station back then meant encountering lots of coins daily. I always made it a point to check them out. You could easily hear the distinct sound of a silver coin hitting the counter! It was a sure sign of a good day.

I collected quite a nice stash of silver coins just by swapping a silver quarter with a regular one from my pocket. The gas station still got its 25 cents for coffee, and I walked away with a silver coin that would’ve gone straight to the bank! None were exceptionally rare, but for about $25 of my own money, my collection grew to be worth hundreds.

I wouldn’t call this a side gig, but it was a unique perk, especially for someone on a cashier’s wage! Others caught on too, and soon it became a bit of a competition. Most sold their coins for their silver value, but I’ve kept mine all these years. Besides coins, I also found things like older bills, but I didn’t keep those. It made my time at the gas station a little more exciting!

Cheers,
John
