The Tale of a Coin Collection

The Tale of a Coin Collection

Hey everyone!

I recently received an amusing story via email that made me think of all of you. 😊

I’ve been missing in action for a bit, but let’s try to breathe life back into this blog and keep the excitement for collecting alive! I’ve still been working behind the scenes and even launched a new service to help people inventory and sell inherited coin collections (feel free to reach out if you ever need assistance!). However, life, business, kids, and COVID have kept the blog on the back burner…

But we’re back now! Let’s kick things off with a delightful tale from the past, a time when silver coins were still relatively common. Sadly, I never got to experience it firsthand, but I can’t help but drool at the thought!

Take it away, John!

Hi J. Money,

I know you love coins, so I thought I’d share a quick and interesting story with you.

My dad and I started collecting coins when I was a kid (I don’t actively collect these days, but my dad still has our small collection). This story begins during my high school days when I worked at a small gas station in York, PA.

I started there at 16 and continued for several years, even after college until I found my first professional job. One perk of working at a gas station was the stream of coins we’d handle in transactions. I developed a habit of checking each one. You could easily tell when a silver coin hit the counter—it had a distinct sound! Hearing it was always a highlight.

Over time, I built a nice little collection of silver coins by swapping out a regular quarter for a silver one when I came across it. The gas station still received the 25 cents for the sale, while I ended up with a valuable coin that otherwise would’ve gone to the bank. None were extremely rare, but for about $25 of my own money, I amassed a collection worth hundreds of dollars.

While it wasn’t exactly a side gig, it was a neat find for someone earning a cashier’s wage. My coworkers eventually caught on, and it became a bit of a friendly competition. They mostly sold their finds right away for their silver value, but I’ve held onto mine all these years. Here’s what I found.

I also came across older bills like red stamp notes and silver certificates, though I didn’t keep those. All in all, it was a fun way to make my gas station job a bit more interesting!

Cheers,
John
