Check out what I just got in the mail—a 1945-S silver Mercury Dime!
This gem was sent by Matt R. as part of our trade-up game 🙂 The idea is pretty simple: I thought it would be fun to start with a low-value coin and see if we can keep trading up to eventually score a bigger, more awesome coin. My ultimate goal is a $20 St. Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (mmmm…). I have no idea how long this will take, but I’d say we’re off to a fantastic start 🙂
I estimated this Mercury Dime is worth about 50¢ to $1.00 (probably closer to 50¢), so now we’re trading up into the $3.00 range with this coin—Woohoo! That’s a whopping 600% trade-up!
Although it’s officially called a “Winged Liberty Head,” it’s more commonly known as a “Mercury” dime because it features the likeness of the Roman god Mercury, who is the messenger of the gods and the god of roads and travel, commerce, property, and wealth. These dimes were minted from 1916 to 1945 and contain 0.07234 oz. of pure silver, with a metal value of approximately $1.52 at today’s silver rates.
Do you think this would be a nice addition to your collection? 😉
A big thanks to Matt R. for joining in the fun and supporting our mission. I can’t wait to see what comes in next!
