Remember that 1955 Doubled Die Penny from last month? Well, if you thought that was rare, wait until you see these! They’re priced at an impressive $299,000 and $95,000, respectively. It’s always fun to dream, isn’t it?
Let’s talk about two incredibly rare 22-karat gold coins. Each weighs about 17 ounces and features artwork by Salvador Dali: one with a unicorn and the other depicting Dionysos and Pallas Athena. These coins were showcased on the reality show “Beverly Pawn,” and only 25 were made worldwide, each signed by Dali himself!
To give you some context, gold is currently valued at $1,270 per ounce as of this writing. So, with 34 ounces in this set, you can imagine the extraordinary value—and the hefty premium that comes with their rarity!
For more details, you can find them on eBay, listed at $299,000: 2 Very Rare Gold Coins/Medals Signed Salvador Dali, as seen on Beverly Hills Pawn.
There’s also another treasure worth mentioning. Although smaller, this coin still packs a punch. It features the head of Pan on one side with an ivy wreath and a griffin on the other side, holding a spear with the lettering Π-A-N.
Here’s a bit of background (from eBay): Pantikapaion was founded by Greek colonists from Miletos in the late seventh century BC, located on the western side of what’s now known as Crimea. The city thrived on the rich fisheries of the straits, and its wheat exports contributed to its prosperity. This wealth is evident from its exquisite gold coins that started to appear in the mid-4th century BC and the well-furnished rock tombs of its leading citizens. It later became a capital of Mithradates VI’s kingdom and eventually the seat of the Bosporos kings.
Pantikapaion’s coinage likely began with silver in the late fifth century BC, but it’s renowned for its stunning gold staters. These coins feature the head of the god Pan, a clever reference to the city’s name, and a griffin on the reverse, which Herodotus described as a guardian of remote gold sources.
