Two Exquisite Gold Coins to Admire…

If you thought the 1955 Doubled Die Penny from last month was rare, wait until you see these treasures! They’re valued at $299,000 and $95,000, respectively.

(Dreaming is always fun, isn’t it?)

We’re talking about two incredibly rare 22-karat gold coins, each weighing around 17 ounces and showcasing the artwork of Salvador Dali: Unicorn and Dionysos Et Pallas Athena. These coins gained fame on the reality show “Beverly Hills Pawn,” and only 25 were produced worldwide, each one individually signed by Dali himself.

To give you some context, as of this writing, one ounce of gold is priced at $1,270, and there are 34 ounces of gold in this set! It’s astonishing—and quite substantial. Of course, there’s a premium due to their unique nature.

On a smaller scale, there’s another intriguing piece with its golden charm. This coin features Pan’s head on one side, adorned with an ivy wreath, and on the reverse, a griffin holding a spear in its mouth alongside the lettering Π-A-N.

Here’s some fascinating history from eBay:

“Pantikapaion was founded by Greek colonists from Miletos in the late seventh century BC. Positioned on the west side of the Cimmerian Bosporus, now known as Crimea, it thrived by utilizing rich fisheries and exporting wheat from the region. This prosperity is shown in its magnificent gold coins, first minted in the mid-4th century BC, as well as by the lavishly outfitted burial sites of its main figures during the same period. Later, it became a regional capital under Mithradates VI of Pontos (120-63 BC) and subsequently the center for the kings of Bosporos (first century BC – fourth century AD). Though it originally issued silver coins in the late fifth century BC, Pantikapaion is primarily celebrated for its stunning gold staters, which depict Pan’s head (a playful nod to the city’s name) and a griffin that Herodotus mentions as guarding distant gold sources.”
