Today, I wanted to share a little routine I have with my coins after acquiring them through trades or purchases. I recently talked about how I decide whether they go into the “box” or the “binder.” However, before they become part of either collection, I like to keep them on my desk beneath my computer monitor for a few weeks or even months, until I feel I’ve enjoyed looking at them enough.
Doing this serves a couple of purposes:
I’ve been following this practice for about a year, and it’s deepened my appreciation for the coins. Plus, when I get distracted during the workday, picking up a coin and admiring it provides a nice break.
You might spot some of the error coins I wrote about last week. I’m planning to swap out some of the older coins in the box with the ones I recently mentioned, like those from the 1800s.
Here’s a rundown of what’s in the picture:
Overall, it’s a fun way to enjoy new coins before they get stored away and possibly forgotten. If you find you’re acquiring more coins than your budget allows, seeing them out like this might also remind you to rein in your spending.
I hope this gives you some inspiration…

P.S. The “Wake up and do nothing” sticky note in the first picture is a nod to an article I read about automating your finances. It serves as a reminder for me to focus on building passive income so I can eventually choose to do nothing with my time—except maybe coin hunting all day in early retirement!
P.P.S. Please excuse my messy desk!
