Three years ago, a blogger friend of mine left a comment on this blog, playfully mentioning a box of old coins he had inherited. At the time, I didn’t give it much thought. However, over the years, people seemed more interested in that box than any blog post I’ve written! Here are some recent comments:
One was from over a year ago, and another just last week—everyone is eager to discover what treasures are inside this mysterious box. To satisfy their curiosity, I decided to email Kyle, hoping he was still around and still had the box. Lucky for us, he did!
Haha, not piles of gold, but there were some pretty great coin holders.
Here’s Kyle’s response to me:
“Hey, that’s funny! I totally forgot about it. My son and I recently went through the box. We found some Morgan silver dollars from the 1920s, a buffalo nickel, an Indian head cent, and several proof sets from the 70s and 80s. One interesting find was a 1943 penny that looks like a dime. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to look that way or if it’s just aged.”
I explained that the “dime-colored” penny is likely a steel penny made during World War II when copper was scarce. It’s cool but not particularly valuable. I asked Kyle to send me the dates and mint marks of the Morgan Dollars so I could check the Red Book for any hidden gems.
When he sent the dates back, none were rare, but still, they’re filled with silver and are cool coins to own. Hopefully, they’ll inspire Kyle Jr. to follow in his great-great uncle’s footsteps and take an interest in coin collecting. We definitely need more young people in this hobby!
By the way, if you want to thank Kyle, here’s his coupon blog: Rather-Be-Shopping.com. I promised him some free publicity for helping us out.
So that’s all for today! No lost treasures were uncovered, but the thrill of the hunt is what keeps us excited in this hobby. You never know what you’ll find!
Does anyone else have boxes hidden in their attic that they’d like to share with us?
